Welcome to the ‘Real’ UnrealDJ Blog – Blog 1
With the winter stop being over and we had some time to rest, we are getting ready for 2023.
Year in review:
We had an amazing 2022 with many different events. We got to play multiple birthdays, anniversaries that were delayed due to covid, multiple weddings, and Risen got his first wedding where the bride and groom requested for him specifically! We got to play at multiple company events and even some government events.
With all these amazing events there were highlights, new ideas, learning points and some missed opportunities (we will come back to these later!).
With so many events it’s difficult to keep track of what these points were and this got us thinking. Why don’t we start a blog on the website where we could keep track of our events and show you, our hosts, organisers and clients the process we go through to make your event better and how we are growing as DJs in the drive-in market..
Best of last year?
One of my (Gorwin/Risen) highlights in 2022 was my first wedding gig. This was so amazing, to be asked personally and provide them an evening they would not forget. To be invited for such a big event is no small thing and I gave it all and then heard the compliments and how happy it made their night. That is exactly why we do it!
While doing the first gig of the year we realized we had built up so much equipment that it was very unorganized . With so many different light fixtures, we needed to be smaller because not every location has the room for a light setup that can hold a show for a 1000 people. But we didn’t want to compromise in quality!
That’s when we got the GigBARs and the new LED bars (wireless, power and DMX), so we can still get the quality of light in the venue/room that we want, but also make it manageable for us as DJs.
And of course we learn along the way. With so much equipment needed for an event we needed to inventory better what we had and our (old) massive bag of cables is now sorted. All cables labeled with name, type and length. The last gig of 2022 needed almost a full mile of cables! It was a corporate event for 300 people. Due to all the cable sorting we managed to set this up in just under 3 hours. The rest of the time we were able to fine-tune things and get it just perfect for the night.
Equipment setting up takes time, but the wires, OMG, that’s where we normally use most time during setup. Not just running the cables but also making sure they look clean, tight and organized.
Missed opportunities
… No, it’s not as bad as it sounds. But there were moments that we looked at each other and thought though, that really was a missed one.
We always ask our client “what do you want us to wear”.
We had a birthday event for a couple. When we asked them what do you want us to wear, they said wear what you like, so we went casual. When we arrived at the event it turned out it was a costume/Halloween party! Everyone was dressed accordingly and we were in … jeans and shirts…! Please, if you host a costume party let us know so we can play dress up as well. If you specifically don’t want that we won’t of course but if “everyone” goes in costume why not.
So whats next? The next event.
From here on we will post a (shorter) blog after every event we’ve had. Where we talk about the highlights, learning curve, missed opportunities(if any) and our experience of the event.
But we’ll also do a show and tell you about our new equipment. (Maybe even with videos!)
Have a great 2023 everyone, Hope we can work on getting you that party you deserve!
Music is Life, that’s why our heart beats.
